A: Follow this short checklist to troubleshoot your heating system:

  • Check your fuel tank gauge. Do you have your oil in your heating oil storage tank? If your tank is empty, call Nydam immediately.
  • If you have fuel in your tank, check your thermostat. Make sure it is set to HEAT and that the COOL function is not on instead.
  • Check that all heating system emergency switches are in the ON position.
  • Press the RESET button on your heating system ONCE ONLY.
  • If you’ve performed all of the above steps and you still don’t have heat, call us right away. We offer 24/7 emergency heating service to our customers.

Q: Do I need to schedule a tune-up every year?

A: Yes. A yearly tune-up is essential to keep your boiler, furnace, or air conditioner working properly. During an annual tune-up your Nydam HVAC tech will perform a safety inspection and can identify any minor issues before they become major problems. Benefits of a tune-up include:

  • Greater efficiency
  • Lower energy bills
  • Reduced risk of breakdowns
  • Savings on unexpected repairs
Q: What type of heating system do I have?

A: There are two types of central heating systems: forced hot water (also known as a boiler) and forced hot air (also known as a furnace). The easiest way to tell which type you have is by the kind of heaters you have in your home. If you have vents, your home is heated by forced hot air or a furnace. If you have baseboard heat or radiators, your home is heated by forced hot water or a boiler.

Q: What is the difference between a ductless mini-split A/C and a central air conditioner?

A: Ductless mini-split units are made up of one outdoor unit and one or more indoor units affixed to interior walls of your home. Central air conditioning systems have one outdoor unit that disperses cool air throughout your home’s central duct system.
